How do I edit a recording I've uploaded?

Recordings you see publish to your Screencast-O-Matic account are not in an editable format they are just for sharing.

If you've uploaded a recording to share on Screencast-O-Matic and you need to edit it you have 2 options:

1. Edit Original Recording (If you are using the same computer that you originally recorded on).

2. Edit From the Uploaded Video File.

Here's the details for the first option scroll down to see the other option.

Option 1: Edit Original Recording (Recommended)


The Pro Recorder will automatically save all recordings you create in an editable format on the computer they were created on.

You can view the editable version of your recordings by opening the Manage Recordings Window where you'll see a thumbnail for each recording that is on your current computer.

If you're starting the Pro Recorder from a Web Browser, you can get to the Manage Recordings Window by logging on to the website and clicking the 'Browse Recordings' button (see yellow arrow in screenshot):



Or If you have the full application installed that you run from the Windows Start Menu or Mac Applications Folder, the Recorder would open to the Manage Recordings Window when you have any saved recordings on that computer.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the Screencast-O-Matic System Tray Icon in Windows or Menu Bar Icon on a Mac to select 'Browse Recordings' which would also take you to the Manage Recordings Window.



Once you select an editable recording from the Manage Recordings Window, it will open into the Playback Preview Window where you can click Edit on the menu you see on the right side (see yellow arrow in screenshot):



Please Note: If you originally created a recording with the older v1 Recorder, those recordings aren't viewable to the v2 Recorder until you use Export from the v1 Recorder to create a .SOM file for each recording you'd like to move over and then use Import in the v2 Recorder to bring those exported recordings over.

Also, if the recording was originally created with the Free Recorder, your recordings wouldn't have been saved in an editable format at all as it is limited and doesn't include the editing features of the Pro Recorder.  

Option 2: Edit From the Uploaded Video File  


If you no longer have the original editable version of your recording but published it to the website, you now also have the option to download the recording as an .MP4 video file and make edits to it starting with version 2.1 of the Recorder.

Keep in mind however that some editing options won't be available when doing this as not all of the editable data is kept when the original recording is saved to an .MP4 file.

To download a recording you've published to the website as an .MP4 video file, login to the website, click the Uploads Tab, hover the mouse over your recording, and click the Chain Link Icon which will bring up the 'Link, Embed, Download' Window where you can click the 'Download MP4' button (see yellow arrow in screenshot):



Once you have your recording saved as an .MP4 video file, you can then Import it into the Recorder so you can make edits by opening the Recorder to the Manage Recordings Window and clicking Import where you'll then see an Import Window open so you can select your saved .MP4 video file (see yellow arrow in screenshot):
